November 3, 1999 Anti-sweatshop code of conduct public forum will be held Nov. 8 ANN ARBOR---The University of Michigan Advisory Committee on Labor Standards and Human Rights will hold a public panel discussion on compliance with its vendor code of conduct, 4-6 p.m. Nov. 8, in the School of Education's Schorling Auditorium.
Panelists include Bama Athreya, International Labor Rights Fund; Jeff Ballinger, Press for Change; Win Swenson, KPMG; and Marion Traub-Werner, United Students Against Sweatshops.
Earlier this year, the University implemented an anti-sweatshop/human rights policy code of conduct for all vendors licensed to sell apparel and other merchandise with the U-M name and logos. The code's provisions include ensuring compensation standards, humane limitations on required work hours, limitations on child labor, and a safe and healthy work environment.
