A University of Michigan research team is using nanoprobes studded with molecules that bind to ions like zinc, calcium or potassium to reveal the patterns of ion exchange that make the cell function. The probes are injected into a cell and computer models are used to interpret the signals probes emit when they have captured a target ion. In this artist’s conception, the sensors are targeting ions on the surface of mitochondria.
