· Applies topics and techniques of materials science and mineralogy to nuclear waste management.
· Has written extensively about the impact of nuclear waste management on the environment.
· With collaborator Bill Weber Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, identified materials that immobilize nuclear waste in chemically durable materials. This research was recognized in 2002 as one of the 101 most important discoveries supported by Department of Energy's Office of Science over the previous 25 years.
· Has analyzed safety assessment criteria for the controversial Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
