EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Global Public Health Preparedness: Is it Possible?

DATE: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 11, 2007.

EVENT: Symposium that examines the issue of public health preparedness six years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Keynote speaker Dr. Helene Gayle, president and CEO of CARE, will discuss public health issues in the context of broader global health and describe CARE's response to public health emergencies worldwide.

Gayle will discuss special problems in preparing for public health emergencies in the global community and how preparedness challenges and responses differ for developed and developing countries. She'll also touch upon the relationship of strained healthcare systems to the potential for infectious disease outbreaks. University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and Ken Warner, dean of the School of Public Health, will deliver opening remarks. Matt Boulton, associate dean for practice in SPH, will serve as the program moderator.

Other speakers include: Ronald Davis, president, American Medical Association, who will discuss the AMA perspective on public health preparedness, and how to strengthen the relationship between medicine and public health; Dr. Julio Frenk, U-M SPH alum and former Mexico Minister of Health, now the Senior Fellow of the Global Health Program, and counsel to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Also, leaders in the China, India, and Ghana public health systems, as well as the deputy director for global health at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will speak.
