Feb. 3, 2004 University of Michigan announces Hopwood winners ANN ARBOR, Mich.—The University of Michigan has announced 22 winners of the fall Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards in Creative Writing. The awards are funded by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 U-M graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother. Past winners include Arthur Miller, John Ciardi and Marge Piercy. The contests were judged by John Lofy, Brenda Marshall, Angela Bommarito and Joseph Heininger. Winners of the Hopwood Underclassmen Contest and in the Poetry Division, listed by hometown, are: MICHIGAN Ann Arbor Robyn Anspach, $1,750, the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship. Jeremiah Chamberlin, $1,500, the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship. Hannah Holtzman, $1,250, Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship. Donovan Hohn, double winner. $1,250, the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship and $100, The Academy of American Poets, Graduate Division. Michelle Regalado Deatrick, $200, The Bain-Swiggett Poetry Prize. Gregory Sarah Eisenberg, $800, the Fall Hopwood Poetry Contest. Grosse Pointe Woods Caroline Martin, $500, the Fall Hopwood Poetry Contest. Howell Sarah Rubin, $100, The Academy of American Poets, Undergraduate Division. Huntington Woods Miriam Tova Levine, $800, the Fall Hopwood Fiction Contest. Weinberg Memorial Prize in Poetry. KANSAS: Lawrence—Jeffrey Cravens, $500 in the Fall Hopwood Fiction Contest. NEW YORK: Briarcliff—Ranya Raghavan, a double winner, $700 in the Fall Hopwood Essay Contest and $400 in the Jeffrey L. Weisberg Memorial Prize in Poetry. OHIO: Solon—Uyen Bui, $1,000 for two stories in the Fall Hopwood Fiction Contest. BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA Qualicum—Suzanne Hancock, $350, The Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry.
