U-M panel will discuss issues regarding adoption, foster care by LGBTQ parents

EVENT: Panelists will examine the legal and policy issues regarding adoption and foster care parenting by LGBTQ parents. They will also address the case of Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer, a Detroit-area lesbian couple seeking to jointly adopt each other’s children and overturn Michigan’s ban on same sex marriage.

Jay Kaplan, staff attorney for the ACLU of Michigan’s LGBT Project, will discuss the ongoing legal challenge to Michigan’s ban on same-sex adoption, and Frank Vandervort, a clinical professor at the University of Michigan Law School, will talk about the recent legal debates in the context of current and past child welfare system policies and practices. In addition, three parents with extensive experience in the child welfare system will share their views and challenges.
