U-M Detroit Center to show documentary about writer James Baldwin

EVENT: The University of Michigan Detroit Center will host a screening of “James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket,” a documentary on the life, works and beliefs of the late writer and civil rights activist.

The event, part of the Sankofa Film Series includes free admission and parking to all guests. Following the film, Gary Anderson of Plowshares Theatre Company will lead a brief discussion.

In the film, Baldwin shares his life experiences of being black, gay, poverty-stricken and gifted. The film also includes intimate interviews and articulates speeches with original scenes from his funeral service in 1987.

Born in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin was the grandson of a slave. He was a preacher in his early life and worked briefly for the railroad, before moving to New York City and Paris to become a freelance writer. His first novel, “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” was published in 1963 and is considered an American classic.

Baldwin also wrote best-selling novels “Giovanni’s Room,” “Another Country” and “The Fire Next Time,” as well as books of essays, “Notes of a Native Son” and “Nobody Knows My Name.” During the early 1960s, he traveled throughout the American South, taking part in the Civil Rights Movement.
