EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: June 24-26, 2014

EVENT: Following the Obama administration’s recent release of the National Climate Assessment, which predicts exacerbated climate impacts throughout the century, the University of Michigan will hold a three-day Adaptation in the Great Lakes Region conference to discuss the NCA, expected climate impacts across the Great Lakes region, and what climate-adaptation efforts will be needed to address those changes.

Tuesday’s (June 24) sessions, which include separate panel discussions about likely national and regional ramifications, are free and open to the public. Wednesday (June 25) and Thursday (June 26) sessions are for registered conference participants only, though reporters are welcome. A full agenda is available at the conference home page: http://graham.umich.edu/glaac/capstone2014

REPORT: A Synthesis of the Third National Climate Assessment for the Great Lakes report will be released as part of the event. It translates how climate impacts forecasted by the NCA are expected to manifest themselves in the Great Lakes region. Topics include temperature, precipitation, effects from increased flooding, impacts to agriculture, forest and land-cover composition, public health risks, and increased risks to the Great Lakes.

PLACE: Sessions on June 24 will be held at the U-M Biomedical Science Research Building, 109 Zina Pitcher Place, Ann Arbor. June 25-26 sessions will be held at the U-M Rackham Graduate School, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor.

Media RSVP: If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Reporter-RSVP@umich.edu with your name, media outlet and contact information.

PARKING: The two closest U-M parking structures with public parking are the Palmer Drive and Ann Street structures. More information, including directions and payment options for both lots, can be found at http://bit.ly/1s0J398

SPONSORS: Jointly organized by U-M’s Graham Sustainability Institute as part of its Great Lakes Adaptation Assessment for Cities project, the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments, the American Society of Adaptation Professionals, the Institute for Sustainable Communities and the Kresge Foundation.
