US, Michigan economic forecasts highlight U-M conference

EVENT: University of Michigan’s 63rd annual Economic Outlook Conference

PLACE: Rackham Building Amphitheater, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor

BACKGROUND: U-M economist Daniil Manaenkov and colleagues will open the conference with “The U.S. Economic Outlook for 2016-2017” at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 19. Richard Curtin, director of the U-M Surveys of Consumers at the Institute for Social Research, will present “The Outlook for Consumption in 2016” at 11 a.m.

The next day (Nov. 20) at 9:30 a.m., U-M economists George Fulton, Joan Crary and Donald Grimes will present “The 2016-2017 Outlook for the Michigan Economy.”

  • “Will the Fed Help Small Business?” by William Dunkelberg, professor emeritus of economics at Temple University and chief economist at the National Federation of Independent Business
  • “CBO’s Assessment of the Economic Outlook Over the Next Decade” by Wendy Edelberg, assistant director for macroeconomic analysis at the Congressional Budget Office
  • “Housing Markets across the United States: Bubbles or Bursts?” by David Berson, senior vice president and chief economist at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co.
  • “Challenges in the U.S. Labor Market and their Impact on Economic Growth” by Betsey Stevenson, U-M associate professor of public policy and former member of the Council of Economic Advisers
  • “Will Robots Steal Our Jobs? The Real Connection between Innovation, Wages, and Wealth” by James Bessen, lecturer in law at Boston University
  • “Deciphering the New Auto Contract: A Transformative Agreement for Industry and Labor?” by Kristin Dziczek, director of the Industry & Labor Group at the Center for Automotive Research, and Arthur Schwartz, president of Labor and Economics Associates
  • “Detroit! Buzz, Bounce or Boom?” by Douglas Kelbaugh, U-M professor of architecture and urban planning
