Expert panel: Future directions in sustainability

EVENT: The Center for Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a symposium that includes a panel discussion about future directions in energy, transportation, buildings and food systems. The event is free and open to the public. The panelists are:

  • Skip Pruss, principal and co-founder, 5 Lakes Energy
  • Eric Wingfield, mobility strategist, Ford Motor Co.
  • Douglas Kelbaugh, U-M professor of architecture, A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning
  • Kami Pothukuchi, professor and chair, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Wayne State University

The panel discussion begins at 3 p.m. and will be preceded by reflections from the Center for Sustainable Systems founders, starting at 1:30 p.m. The center began in 1991 as the National Pollution Prevention Center for Higher Education and has grown over the past 25 years into a leading authority on sustainable systems. In the process, CSS has produced more than 200 projects, 500 publications and 2,000 participants who have made a difference globally.

Friday’s events will be preceded on Thursday evening by the annual Wege Lecture on Sustainability at 5 p.m. in Rackham Auditorium. Professor William Clark of Harvard University will deliver a lecture titled “Pursuing Sustainability: Linking Science and Practice.”

PLACE: Panel discussion will be held in Room 1040, U-M’s Dana Building, Ann Arbor.
