European Union ambassador to U.S. to speak at U-M

EVENT: John Bruton, the European Union’s ambassador to the United States, will be at the University of Michigan to talk about numerous issues dominating news coverage, including the European Union, the economy, the war on terrorism and the recent cartoon controversy, as well as the recent enlargement of the EU and the potential enlargement of the EU slated for 2007.

Bruton, a former prime minister of Ireland and long time member of the Irish Parliament, was a passionate supporter of European integration, helped draft the European Union constitution and became its ambassador to the United States in summer 2004. As head of the delegation, Bruton’s focus is on strengthening EU-U.S. ties.

The EU’s delegation in the United States is one of the largest, with a staff of 80. Its activities cover all major areas of trans-Atlantic relations, including trade; political, economic and financial development; agriculture; consumer policy; transport; energy; environment; science; and technology.
