U-M researcher part of D.C. panel about prescription drug abuse

EVENT:” Prescription Drug Abuse?An Emerging Public Health Threat,” a Congressional briefing sponsored by the Friends of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. NIDA is a part of the National Institutes of Health.

Reporters are invited to attend this briefing. Lunch will be provided.

Panelists include:

? Carol Boyd, a researcher at the University of Michigan’s Substance Abuse Research Center, will discuss results from her studies of prescription drug abuse among adolescents and college students.

? Nick Saba will offer his personal perspective on recovering from prescription drug addiction with the aid of a treatment medication developed by NIDA.

? Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will provide an overview of NIDA’s prescription drug abuse and treatment research portfolio.

Boyd is a professor of nursing and women’s studies, and is director of the U-M Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

She was lead author on a paper in the January issue of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, examining prescription pain medication abuse among fifth- through 10th-grade students. A news release on that research is at: http://www.umich.edu/news/index.html?Releases/2005/Nov05/r110805b
