Undergraduates earn $8,800 in Hopwood, other writing awards

ANN ARBOR—Ten students at the University of Michigan have won Hopwood Underclassmen Awards for creative writing, sharing M Hopwood program, 13 students received $5,250 in prize winnings.

Funded by a bequest from U-M alumnus and Broadway playwright Avery Hopwood, the Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards are presented three times annually, with the major competition in April.

Winners, listed by hometown, are:

MICHIGAN:

ADA—Bich Minh Nguyen, graduate student in English, $500 for the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship.

ANN ARBOR—Tasha Antonello, graduate student in English, Messiahop” and $100 for the Academy of American Poets Prize for “If Not You”; Eric Leigh Breedon, graduate student in English, senior in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $100 for the Academy of American Poets Prize for “Remembering Driver Education”; Belinda Kremer, graduate student in English, $100 for the Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry for “Skins of Earth”; and Deanne Lundin, graduate student in English, $500 for the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship.

HOLLAND—Cara Spindler, sophomore in the Residential College, $400 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Poetry category for “Submerged Fruits.”

HUNTINGTON WOODS—Matthew Rochkind, freshman in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $250 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Fiction category for “Right in the Middle.”

IRONWOOD—Katherine Gotham, freshman in the Residential College, $350 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Essay category for “A Woman in Love.”

KALAMAZOO—Brian Fichtner, sophomore in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $300 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Poetry category for “On Becoming.”

LIVONIA—Dean Bakopoulos, senior in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $500 for the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship.

MACOMB—Melissa Jones, freshman in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $300 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Essay category for “Digging for Gold” and “Bridges, Rivers and Grandmothers.”

PARMA—Fritz Garner Swanson, sophomore in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $500 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Essay category for “Fathers, Lightning” and $100 for the Louise and George Piranian Scholarship.

PLEASANT RIDGE—Sara Kathleen Talpos, senior in the Residential College, $500 for the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship.

SAGINAW—Brie Tiderington, sophomore in the Residential College, $500 in the Hopwood Underclassmen Fiction category for “Five Short Stories.”
