U-M’s LGBPO marks 25th anniversary

ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Programs Office (LGBPO) will mark its 25th anniversary with a symposium, to be held April 4-5 at several campus locations.

Titled “Pasts, Presents, and Futures,” the symposium will spotlight the office’s historic legacy as the nation’s first professionally staffed university resource center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, faculty and staff, said Ronni Sanlo, LGBPO director.

Lecture and commentary by Urvashi Vaid, well-known attorney, author and civil rights activist, will highlight the symposium. Her keynote lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. Hutchins Hall, at the Law School.

Vaid is best known for her work as executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, where she co-founded the national gay political gathering “Creating Change,” initiated organizing for the 1993 March on Washington, and helped plan the lesbian and gay community’s presence at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 political conventions.

Other symposium activities will include a Law School colloquium on the legal and social issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth; presentations by local historians and U-M alumni; an open house; a reception; and Club Fabulous dance party.
