Contemporary Cuba with a timba beat

ANN ARBOR—”TropiCola,” a film that gives an in-depth look at contemporary Cuba will be presented at the Michigan Theater at 7 p.m. Oct. 11. Sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Program in American Culture and the University’s Latino/a Studies Program, the street-level perspective of life in and around Havana ranges from loyalty to the revolution, to under-the-table money-making schemes and Santeria.

Filmed on location by director Steve Fagin, the production is laced with Havana’s popular timba beat. The 95-minute film is in Spanish with English subtitles and is the winner of the Latin American Studies Association 1998 Award for Merit in Film.

The screening at the Michigan Theater includes a discussion with the director. Admission is $6.75; students/seniors $5.25; and Michigan Theater members $4.50.

A reception with Fagin will be held 4-6 p.m. at the Shaman Drum Bookshop on Oct. 10. The Shaman Drum is located at 313 South State St. in Ann Arbor. Fagin is the author of “Talkin’ with Your Mouth Full: Conversations with the Videos of Steve Fagin,” published by Duke University Press.
