ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Police Department has received its second prestigious accreditation within the last six months.

The International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators approved the award last week, but will formally recognize the U-M Police Department’s four-year accreditation at its annual conference June 28-July 2 in Louisville, Ky.

Last August, the U-M Police Department earned a three-year law enforcement reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

“We’re very proud to be one of the few law enforcement agencies in the country to be accredited by the two most-esteemed accrediting organizations in our industry,” said U-M Police Chief Joe Piersante. “We know that the daily work of our officers to help keep our campus community a safe environment is exemplary. These two accreditation awards officially affirm that work.”

IACLEA accreditation “constitutes recognition that a department conforms to the highest professional standards for campus law enforcement and protective services,” according to the organization. Accredited agencies have been reviewed by the IACLEA Accreditation Commission to ensure they show compliance with several hundred professional standards.

“This accreditation specifically validates our campus public safety efforts,” Piersante said. “IACLEA represents more than 1,200 institutions of higher education and fewer than 50 agencies have been awarded accreditation.”
