ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan School of Nursing is offering a four-course online program to prepare college graduates of any age to become research study managers in both academic and industry settings.

This focus on academic research distinguishes the U-M SN Clinical Research Management certificate program from others. Most similar programs focus on industry-driven research studies, and the FDA requirements necessary to bring the industry research to market.

However, understanding the ethical and regulatory issues for both academic and clinical research studies gives students who earn the U-M SN certificate more flexibility and professional marketability.

Another key opportunity is that upon completion, students may apply for an internship at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, which works with U-M SN to train and expand the number of clinical research coordinators.

Anyone with an undergraduate degree may enroll. U-M SN administers the program, but nursing experience isn’t required. Classes begin July 2013, and students can earn the certificate in less than one year if classes are taken consecutively.

Terry VandenBosch, adjunct associate professor, is the lead faculty member. VandenBosh also works in the U-M Office of the Vice President for Research. The courses follow Society of Clinical Research Associates, Inc. (SOCRA) guidelines.
