ANN ARBOR—University of Michigan School of Education Dean Deborah Loewenberg Ball has been appointed by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to serve on the Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education.

The AAAS announced the commission Wednesday, saying it is part of a three-year initiative to “examine the vast—and expanding—array of learning options available to high-school graduates, including both students newly out of high school and older adults returning to school to further their lives and careers.”

The commission comprises national leaders in education, business, and government. Former U-M Public Policy Dean Rebecca Blank, now chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, also will serve, along with U-M alumni Beverly Daniel Tatum and John Seely Brown.

The AAAS said the commission will conduct a data-driven examination to assess how students are being served under the current system, and to identify challenges and opportunities in the future.

The Academy has received $2.2 million from Carnegie Corp. of New York for the three-year initiative. Spencer Foundation President Michael McPherson and TIAA-CREF President and CEO Roger W. Ferguson, Jr. will co-chair the commission.
