U-M Debate Team takes third place in national tournament

ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Debate Team of seniors Joseph Krakoff and William Morgan won third place at the 70th annual National Debate Tournament in Binghamton University in New York.

They beat Wake Forest University in the Quarterfinals on a 4-1 decision and Northwestern University in the Octafinals on a 4-1 decision. The team lost on a 4-1 decision to the University of Kansas in the semifinals.

In the preliminary round, they were 7-1 and the top seed in the elimination rounds.

The program, which is part of the Office of the Vice President for Student Life, has reached the final four at the National Debate Tournament 11 times since 1988, including four second place finishes in 1989, 1991, 2014 and 2015.

The tournament featured 78 teams of two debaters.
