U-M recognizes students with Hopwood Awards for creative writing

ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan announced winners of the Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards during the 2016 Graduate and Undergraduate Hopwood Awards Ceremony at Rackham Auditorium.

The awards are funded by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother. Past winners include Arthur Miller, John Ciardi and Marge Piercy.

The winners—including those designated with (*) for multiple awards—include:

HOPWOOD DRAMA

  • *Christin Lee, a class of 2016 MFA Student in the Helen Zell Writers’ Program from Ann Arbor, for “Succor the Buffalo,” $6,500.
  • *Warner James Wood, a class of 2016 MFA Student in the Helen Zell Writers’ Program from Blue Ridge, Ga., for “Good Boy,” $9,000.
