ANN ARBOR—When the University of Michigan kicked off its Victors for Michigan campaign in November 2013, it set a goal of raising $4 billion, including a goal of $1 billion for student support.

Members of the U-M Board of Regents made personal commitments to help in this effort by creating a focused campaign within the larger campaign—the Southeast Michigan Student Support Initiative—and by reaching out to their networks of alumni and friends of the university at donor events in the counties. The regents set a goal of raising at least $25 million during the fiscal year from donors in the 10 southeast Michigan counties.

Nearly 7,000 donors in southeast Michigan contributed a total of $36.3 million this fiscal year.

Donors made gifts for scholarships, fellowships, internships and global study to all the schools and units in the university, including the Office of Financial Aid, which distributes funds to students throughout the university. About 84 percent of the gifts were designated to the endowment where they will generate funds for students now and in the future. Sixteen percent of the gifts were expendable so they will begin helping students immediately.

“It is wonderful to see the University of Michigan community rallying around our ambitious Victors for Michigan goal to raise $1 billion for student support,” said U-M President Mark Schlissel. “I appreciate the regents’ leadership in launching and supporting the campaign’s successful Southeast Michigan Student Support Initiative.”

The Victors for Michigan campaign continues. Donors so far have made gifts totaling $3.4 billion, including $588 million toward the student support goal.
