Four Michigan residents to receive full-ride academic scholarships

ANN ARBOR—Four recent Michigan high school graduates have been chosen to receive the Bentley Scholarship, the University of Michigan’s most prestigious award for undergraduate students.

The Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Scholarship recognizes recipients as among the most outstanding Michigan residents to apply to the U-M. The award covers four years of undergraduate tuition, fees, and room and board, and provides a book allowance.

The winners, all of whom will enroll as freshmen at the U-M this fall, are Keri L. Schwiderson of Brimley, Elizabeth A. Huebner of Grosse Pointe Shores, Amy S. McConnell of Linden, and Kalman M. Nanes of Southfield.

Schwiderson, a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and valedictorian at Brimley High School in the Upper Peninsula, was her track team’s most valuable player, served as captain of the basketball team, and twice played the leading role in her school class play.

Huebner, who graduated first in her class at Grosse Pointe North High School, was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, has won numerous science and math awards, was an all-conference cross-country runner and has volunteered at a medical center near her home and for Habitat for Humanity.

McConnell, Linden High School’s salutatorian, was co-captain of her school’s quiz bowl team, was a student council officer, has taught studio dance and was chosen to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls’ State.

Nanes, a top graduate and National Merit Scholarship semifinalist at Groves High School in Beverly Hills, has won several awards in math, served as co-captain of his school’s quiz bowl team and was a tenor in his school’s award-winning jazz/madrigal ensemble.

Established in 1983 by the Bentley Foundation of Owosso, the Bentley Scholarship program continues the Bentley family’s tradition of supporting educational excellence by providing scholarship assistance to Michigan students.

Alvin Bentley, a 1940 U-M graduate, spent most of his life in public service. He devoted the early part of his career to the U.S. diplomatic corps, served four terms in Congress, and was a member of the U-M Board of Regents from 1966 until his death in 1969. The Bentley Historical Library at U-M was completed in 1972 with a gift from the Bentley family.
