ANN ARBOR—University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger will present his annual message to Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, regarding the status of research at the U-M at 4 p.m. Jan. 19 in Room 1210 of the Chemistry Building.

His address, “How Do We Sustain and Improve Research at the University of Michigan?” is Bollinger’s second annual lecture to Sigma Xi about research at the U-M.

Although U-M presidents traditionally have addressed members of Sigma Xi since the U-M chapter was founded in 1905, the concept of an annual lecture on the status of research began in the late 1980s, when then-President James J. Duderstadt, who is a member of Sigma Xi, delivered the first annual address.

Founded in 1886, Sigma Xi is an international honor society for scientists and engineers. Membership is open to individuals who have demonstrated excellence or considerable potential for excellence in research. The U-M chapter of Sigma Xi has about 700 active members.
