President Bollinger statement on investigation of former booster

Statement on ongoing investigation

University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger issued this statement today:

I would like to make a brief statement about possible future developments in the United States Attorney’s investigation of alleged criminal activities by a former Athletics Department booster who was formally banned in March 1997. Since this matter first resurfaced last year, we have been made aware of the United States Attorney’s investigation, have provided information when asked and will continue to do so. We are fully committed to finding out the truth about what may have happened and to uphold the highest standards and values in our athletics programs.

Since the time we have been made aware of the United States Attorney’s investigation, we have been careful not to conduct any inquiry that might interfere with the federal investigation. We will continue to follow that practice.

We at Michigan take great pride in our varsity athletics programs and their tradition of excellence. It is imperative for us to maintain the highest standards of conduct for the student-athletes, the staff, and all those who support our programs.
