ANN ARBOR—As business moves at a faster and faster clip, managing information is getting more complicated. Smart employees know they need to keep their skills sharp. Digital Tool Kit workshops offered by the University of Michigan School of Information offer one way to stay on top. The workshops run two and one-half days each from May through July.

“The courses are an excellent way for employees to improve on existing job skills or explore new career interests,” says Karen Jordan, who coordinates the Digital Tool Kits. “Information Age jobs are among the hottest in the marketplace.”

Leading practitioners and faculty from the U-M teach the workshops. Among the instructors is Hal Davis, president, CEO, and cofounder of BlueGill Technologies, Inc., an international software development company. Davis, who holds an M.B.A. from the U-M, has extensive experience with high-technology start-ups and marketing. He and Vinay Gupta, vice-president, CFO, and cofounder of BlueGill Technologies, will teach “Building an Internet Business.”

Other Digital Tool Kit courses include: “E-marketing: Strategies and Tactics for the Information Age”; “Strategic Marketing”; “Fundamentals of Competitive Intelligence”; “Technology for Group and Team Work: What’s Good, What’s Bad, and What’s Free”; “The Internet Today: Your Rights and Responsibilities”; “Information Technology: How to Protect Yourself and Your Company”; “Information Architecture: An Integrated Approach to Web Sites”; “Usability Methods in Web Site Design”; and “Project Management.”

Courses may be taken for U-M academic credit, to earn continuing education units, or simply for enrichment. New this year is a certification option for those selecting from pre-defined groups of courses in e-business basics, Internet security and policy, and Web site development.
