EDITORS: This event is open to media personnel only.

On April 3, University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger will host “Imagining Michigan,” a one-day cultural caucus. The event is co-sponsored by the U-M, the Michigan Humanities Council, and the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs. Gov. John Engler will serve as honorary chair of the caucus. He will not be attending.

“Imagining Michigan” will provide a model for other states participating in “Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life,” a White House initiative dedicated to campus/community partnerships. Julie Ellison, director of Imagining America, notes that the arts and humanities are not a luxury item, but are essential to vital civic communities.

Media are invited to attend at times that are convenient for them or to stay for the day. Arrangements can be made for media representatives to take an active part in the caucus, working in break-out groups with leaders in various sectors (education, culture, business, state and municipal government), all of whom bring to the table a comprehensive view of the state. To make such arrangements, contact Stacy Wilkin at (734) 763-6048 or swilkin@umich.edu.
