Engineering faculty honored by IEEE

ANN ARBOR—A dozen faculty members at the University of Michigan College of Engineering were recently chosen to receive a prestigious award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The award, called the Millennium Medal, was given to a select group of IEEE members who have enriched the organization by their “outstanding achievements and contributions.” Less than 1 percent of the membership of the Institute received this honor, which will be distributed at the organization’s flagship conferences in 2000.

Nine of the recipients are faculty members in the College’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. They include Dean and Prof. Stephen W. Director, Prof. George I. Haddad, Prof. Alfred O. Hero III, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Prof. Linda P. B. Katehi, Research Scientist Valdis V. Liepa, Prof. Yale N. Patt, Prof. EmeritusThomas B. A. Senior, Associate Prof. Gregory H. Wakefield, and U-M Vice President for Research and Prof. Fawwaz T. Ulaby.

The other three recipients include Prof. N. Harris McClamroch of the Department of Aerospace Engineering; Prof. Glenn F. Knoll of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences; and Prof. Chelsea C. White III of the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering.

The IEEE is a global association of engineers, scientists and allied professionals whose technical interests are rooted in electrical and computer science and engineering and related disciplines.
