School of Public Health sponsors Community Service-Learning Fair

ANN ARBOR—The School of Public Health at the University of Michigan will sponsor the 7th Annual Community Service-Learning Fair at 3 p.m. Oct. 2 at the School, 109 S. Observatory.

The fair is an open house for more than 40 community-based organizations throughout Michigan. Their goal is to give U-M students and faculty an opportunity to meet with community organizations and arrange experiential learning and community service opportunities that they can integrate into their course work and employment. Faculty may use this opportunity to talk about research ideas, arrange for guest speakers for the classroom or other community components to their courses.

Students attending or interested in the health profession schools at U-M are invited to participate.

The fair will begin with a keynote address by U-M graduate Chris Allen, president and chief executive officer of Family Road Care Centers, and will take place in the Auditorium of the Henry Vaughn Building (School of Public Health I). The fair will follow the keynote address, 3:45-5:15 p.m., on the third floor.

Participants who have confirmed attendance are the Corner Health Center, Domestic Violence Project/Safe House, the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Migrant Health Promotion, and Genesee County Community Action Agency, among others.

The Community Service-Learning Fair is held annually at the School of Public Health in commemoration of the accomplishments of the late Dr. Albert H. Wheeler. Wheeler was the first African-American to hold a tenured faculty position at the University and was the first and only African-American mayor of Ann Arbor. Wheeler was a graduate of the U-M School of Public Health, received a M.S.P.H. and a Dr.PH in health and public hygiene. Wheeler’s dual role of academic scholar and community leader embodies the theme and purpose of the fair.
