DPS and OSEH to host Safety Open House

ANN ARBOR&#8212How do University of Michigan staff members measure their air quality and noise pollution? How does a fire extinguisher really work? Why do emergency responders look like they are wearing space suits sometimes? What equipment is added to a police car and to an emergency response vehicle?

These and many more questions will be answered during the annual Safety Open House at 1239 Kipke Drive on Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. until 2.p.m. The Open House, sponsored by the U-M’s Department of Public Safety and Occupational Safety and Environmental Health Department (OSEH), will include tours of the facility and dozens of displays featuring numerous safety issues.

Open to the University community and their families, each visitor will have a chance to sit in a police car, tour the Communications Center, try on personal protection equipment, learn more about special environmental projects including U-M’s efforts to keep storm water drains clean, and see a demonstration of fire protection equipment. Visitors will also leave with a new reflective trick-or-treat bag and other goodies. Refreshments will also be available.

“This is an opportunity for the University community to learn about a variety of safety and security efforts that each person can implement both on the job and at home,” said Kelli Ford, OSEH’s training coordinator.
