ANN ARBOR—Playwright and University of Michigan alumnus Arthur Miller, scheduled to be honored at a three-day symposium beginning Thursday (Oct. 26), suffered three broken ribs in a fall last week and will be unable to attend in person. Symposium events will go on as planned but Miller will connect with the audience via a live, interactive satellite link from his home in Connecticut.

Miller is feeling well, noted symposium organizer Enoch Brater, but his doctor expressed concern over the extensive travel and vigorous schedule of events planned as part of Miller’s participation in the symposium. Miller said he was very disappointed that he could not be on campus in person for the events planned in his honor, said Brater, who is U-M professor of English and of theater.

“Although we are very sorry that Mr. Miller cannot be in Ann Arbor, we are delighted that he has graciously agreed to participate in this 21st-century presentation,” Brater said. “The audience will be able to see and hear from him just as if he were in the room, and he will be able to hear our questions and comments. I believe it will be a special interaction with a man who has meant a great deal to the history of our campus and American theater more broadly.”

The public program involving Miller will begin Thursday at 2 p.m. in Rackham Auditorium as previously announced. Scheduled is the unveiling of a plaque in Miller’s honor which will eventually be installed in the All of the public events scheduled as part of the symposium will go on as planned, including panel discussions and presentations by critics and scholars from around the world and featuring Mel Gusso from the New York Times.
