ANN ARBOR—The University Of Michigan continues its tradition of raising public awareness of recycling and buying products with recycled content through America Recycles Day events.

For the third year, fans at Michigan Stadium will have the opportunity to receive an official America Recycles Day souvenir, sign a pledge card to recycle and purchase recycled content products, and take a guess at how many bottles were recycled at the stadium this season. The new bottle recycling program came about as a result of a waste assessment at the stadium in conjunction with America Recycles Day in 1998. The necessity for this program became apparent as stadium concessions increased sales of bottled water and soft drinks. On average, two tons of plastic bottles are collected per game. Along with the cardboard recycling program, now in its sixth season, the overall recycling program reduces the volume of game day waste by one-third.

Pledge cards and souvenirs will be available at the America Recycles Day tables located at all main gates during the Penn State game on Saturday (Nov. 11).

Following the America Recycles Day event at the Big House, Waste Management Services will have an open house of their new offices on Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will view educational displays, receive promotional gifts and enjoy light refreshments. America Recycles Day pledge cards will also be available.

All pledge cards received by Nov. 20 will be entered to win the American Green Dream House to be given away in a random drawing held on Dec. 15. The Green Dream House is a brand new three bedroom 2 ½ bath home built with recycled and energy efficient materials. Drawings will also be held for state and local prizes. Pledge on the Web at www.americarecyclesday.org.
