Visiting writers series; Hopwood Underclassmen Awards

ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan’s visiting writers series continues with three events in January. • Mongane Wally Serote will read from his poetry at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Rackham Amphitheater. Serote is a poet, novelist and member of the South African Parliament. Recent works include the collection of poems “Third World Express,” the novel “Gods of Our Time” and most recently a collection of essays “The Hyenas.” His awards include the Ingrid Jonker Prize; the Noma Award, an award for the Best Southern African writing, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Natal. • The Hopwood Underclassmen Awards ceremony for first- and second-year fall term U-M students will take place at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Rackham Auditorium. Following the distribution of the writing contest awards, Pulitzer Prize recipient C.K. Williams will read from his poetry. Awards to be presented include: the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship, the Academy of American Poets Prize, the Bain-Swiggett Poetry Prize, the Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry, and the Jeffrey L. Weisberg Memorial Prize in Poetry. For more information on the Hopwood Awards, contact Andrea Beauchamp at (734) 764-6296. • Miles Harvey and Michael Paterniti will present their nonfiction readings at 5 p.m. Jan. 25 at U-M Rackham Amphitheater. Harvey wrote radio and TV stories for United Press International, was managing editor of In These Times magazine, wrote the book review column for Outside magazine, and recently wrote the book “The Island of Lost Maps.” Harvey has an M.F.A. degree in creative writing from U-M. Paterniti is also an alumnus of the U-M’s M.F.A. Program. He won the 1998 National Magazine Award for his article “Driving Mr. Albert” which provided the basis for his recent book of the same title. Paterniti is the former executive editor of Outside magazine. His work appeared in Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, Details, and Esquire. The visiting writers series is sponsored by the U-M Department of English and the Office of the Provost. All readings are open to the public.
