Students earn thousands in Hopwood writing awards ANN ARBOR—Eleven University of Michigan students received $6,500 in awards for their outstanding essay, fiction and poetry writings from the Hopwood Awards Program.

Nicholas Delbanco, U-M professor of English and director of the Hopwood Awards Program, also presented $8,700 in awards for other literary contests during the Hopwood Awards ceremony.

Anna Clark, a U-M sophomore from St. Joseph, Mich., was a triple winner with two awards from the Hopwood Underclassmen Essay and Fiction categories and an award from the Louise and George Piranian Scholarship fund.

Funded by a bequest from U-M alumnus and Broadway playwright Avery Hopwood, the Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards are presented three times annually, with the major competition in April.

Heather Abner, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $250 from the Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry for her work “From the Silver Cap of My Stanley Thermos”;

Scott J. Berzon, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $1,000 from the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship;

Manu Samriti Chander, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $100 from the Academy of American Poets Prize-Graduate Division for “Off Switch”;

Phillip Crymble, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $1,000 from the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship;

Margaret Dean, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $1,000 from the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship;

Darcie Dennigan, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $1000 from the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship and $300 from the Bain-Swiggett Poetry Prize for “Aunt Marge’s Funeral”;

Joshua Izenberg, a sophomore in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $600 from the Hopwood Underclassmen Poetry category for his work “Collected Works”;

Kate Levy, a sophomore in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $400 from the Hopwood Underclassmen Poetry category for “Wanted or Needed.” BEVERLY HILLS—

Robyn Anspach, freshman in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $600 from the Hopwood Underclassmen Poetry category for “Ten Poems” and $300 from the Jeffrey L. Weisberg Memorial Prize in Poetry for “An Old Man.” BIRMINGHAM—

Nicholas Allen Harp, a MFA student in Creative Writing, $250 from the Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry for “American Movie: Jack Byweather.” EAST LANSING—

Adam Hunault, a freshman in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, $700 from the Hopwood Underclassmen Fiction category for “Joy Ride.” HUNTINGTON WOODS—
