ANN ARBOR—CNN/CNN.com Senior Correspondent Elizabeth “Beth” Nissen will be returning home to Ann Arbor to visit her alma mater as this year’s Helen L. DeRoy Visiting Professor in Honors.

An award-winning journalist who counts an Emmy for outstanding news coverage in 1998 among her honors, Nissen is teaching “Human Experience: A Cartography Course for Journalists” through March 23.

She will be delivering two lectures during her residency: “Writing Well in One Easy Lesson” at 4 p.m. Tuesday (
Nissen received a B.A. in journalism in the LS&A Honors program in 1975, and then earned an M.S. in journalism at Columbia University in 1976, where she was awarded the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship.

In 1978 Nissen began her professional career as a staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal. In 1980 Newsweek hired her as bureau chief in Mexico and South America. She joined the faculty of Columbia University as adjunct professor in 1984 and was promoted to associate professor of journalism in 1985. In 1986 Nissen became a general assignment correspondent for ABC News in New York and is now a senior correspondent for CNN/CNN.com.

In 1981 the DeRoy Visiting Professorship was endowed by the Helen L. DeRoy Foundation to make it possible for students to study with distinguished persons in business, government, labor, the law, and various scholarly disciplines.
