Search committee named for provost

Search committee named for provostANN ARBOR—A 13-member search advisory committee has been appointed by University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger to help identify candidates for the position of provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. The provost is the chief academic officer and chief budget officer for the University.

Nancy Cantor, the current provost who has served since September 1997, is leaving in August to become chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Bollinger indicated he will appoint an interim provost by the beginning of the upcoming academic year.

Bollinger announced that, as in the last search for U-M provost, he will chair the search advisory committee. Committee members will be: Linda M. Abriola, professor of civil and environmental engineering, College of Engineering; Susan E. Alcock, the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and associate professor of classical archaeology and classics, Department of Classical Studies, and assistant research scientist, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA); David Ginsburg, the Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Professor of Medicine, professor of internal medicine and professor of human genetics, Medical School, and investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Michael D. Kennedy, vice provost for international affairs, director of the International Institute, associate professor of sociology and associate research scientist, Center for Russian and East European Studies, LSA;

Also: Earl Lewis, dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, vice provost for academic affairs-graduate studies, professor of history and Afroamerican and African studies, LSA; Kyle D. Logue, professor of law, Law School; Mojtaba Navvab, associate professor of architecture, A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and chair, Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs; Shirley C. Neuman, dean of LSA, professor of English language and literature and professor of women’s studies; Matthew Nolan, president of the Michigan Student Assembly and student in LSA; Timothy P. Slottow, associate vice president for finance, Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; William R. Roush, the Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Professor of Chemistry, LSA; and Karen Wolff, dean of the School of Music and the Paul C. Boylan Collegiate Professor of Music.

Providing staff support for the search will be Gary Krenz, special counsel to the president, and Pamela Fitzgerald, executive secretary, Office of the President. Nominations
