The University community responds to national tragedy

A recently updated Travel Informationand Registration website provides information to members of the University community on international travel and a registry for University people who are planning travel abroad.

The University of Michigan School of Public Health hosts aforum Nov. 26, cosponsored by the U-M Life Sciences, Values, and Society Program and the International Institute, on how the nation’s public health system and the school itself should deal with biological, chemical and nuclear terrorism, featuring expert speakers and audience discussion.

The International Institute‘s Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies sponsors a lecture by anthropology Prof. Nazif M. Shahrani, Director of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and Chairperson of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Indiana University, on “Afghanistan, the Taliban and Global Terror” 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 in the auditorium of the Chemistry Building.

As of Nov. 9, bags no longer will be allowed in University of Michigan’s Yost and Crisler arenas for hockey and basketball games.

William Bess, director of public safety, says the U-M Department of Public Safety and Security is attending to heightened security issues and is working with local, state and federal agencies as appropriate, but the department will not discuss details of any security measures being taken.
