The following statement was issued today (Oct. 8) by the University of Michigan Board of Regents in response to Columbia University’s appointment of Lee C. Bollinger as its next president:

“We have valued Lee Bollinger’s leadership, and the many key initiatives he has nurtured that have kept the University of Michigan among the very best universities in the world. Despite President Bollinger’s contributions, we have seen time and time again that the University’s tremendous energy and remarkable intellectual momentum transcend any of its individual leaders. It is our task now to ensure that the next president of the University will be an individual dedicated to the unique values and strengths that define Michigan, and to carrying forward the many important efforts begun but not yet completed.

“We have met today to discuss our next steps, and will soon shape an architecture for the search process and other operational issues necessary. We are committed to a consultative, engaged discussion with the University’s stakeholders to select the very best leadership for the years ahead.”
