ANN ARBOR—Tom Buresh, professor of architecture, will chair the Architecture Program of the University of Michigan’s A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Buresh is widely recognized for work that engages both critical practice and contemporary theory.

Buresh received his M. Arch. degree from UCLA in 1985 and his B.A. in architecture from Iowa State University in 1978. From 1988 to 2001, he was a full-time member of the faculty of Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), Los Angeles. As an educator, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the curricular focus and forging the international reputation of SCI-Arc. He has taught drawing courses and undergraduate and graduate design studio, presented thesis preparation seminars, and served as a thesis adviser. He also has held visiting critic and visiting professor appointments at UCLA; University of California, Berkeley; Rice University; University of Texas, Austin; and the University of Minnesota.

Buresh has worked at several notable Los Angeles architectural firms including Frank O. Gehry and Associates, Studio Works with Robert Mangurian, and Frank Israel Design Associates. His work has been published and exhibited in the United States and abroad.

Buresh and his wife, Danelle Guthrie, are partners in the architectural practice of Guthrie + Buresh. The firm is viewed by critics as one of the handful of influential practices carrying forward the distinguished history of Modernism in Los Angeles.

“We are thrilled to recruit a teacher and practitioner of national standing to chair our largest and oldest program,” said Doug Kelbaugh, dean of the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. “Tom blends the profession and academy with skill, intelligence and humor, all of which he will be able to bring to bear in ways new for us and for him.”
