ANN ARBOR—The Annual Blood Battle, a competition between the University of Michigan and Ohio State University, will kick off its 20th anniversary Nov 4. The event, which is sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and the American Red Cross, takes place during the two weeks preceding the Michigan-Ohio State football game, set for Nov. 24.

This year’s Blood Battle takes on special significance in light of the events of Sept. 11, according to organizers. According to Blood Battle Co-Chair Sean Meyers, a U-M junior, this year’s Battle takes on a special meaning because “we need to ensure that there is “an ample blood supply in the event of another national emergency.” The competition will be a special tribute to New York City.

Persons who wish to donate blood during the Blood Battle must be in good health, at least 17 year old, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Ann Arbor community members are encouraged to get involved and help meet this year’s goal of 2,000 pints of blood. Blood Battle donations will be accepted at various locations around Ann Arbor until Nov. 16. The winner of the Battle will be announced during the Michigan-Ohio State football game on Nov. 24.

For more information or to make an appointment to donate blood, visit the Blood Battle Web site (www.umbloodbattle.org).
