DPS to host county law enforcement memorial service

ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Department of Public Safety (DPS) will host the annual county-wide law enforcement memorial service at 10 a.m.

The service, which is open to the public, will honor 11 law enforcement officers from Washtenaw County who have died in the line of duty in past 67 years. The most recent on-duty death in the county occurred in 1996.

“We are honored to host this important event that pays tribute to our fallen comrades,” said DPS Director William Bess. “The events of Sept. 11 have raised the public’s awareness that our officers put their lives on the line each and every day to provide a safe and secure community environment.

“We owe a large debt of gratitude to the 11 officers who lost their lives. This ceremony is one small way to keep memories of them alive.”

Five law enforcement agencies in Washtenaw County have suffered a fallen officer since 1935—four with the Ann Arbor Police Department, four with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department, and one each with the Department of Corrections, the Milan Police Department and the Ypsilanti Police Department.

Similar services will be conducted by law enforcement agencies across the country during National Police Week, May 13-19.
