U-M experts available for eating disorders awareness week coverage

ANN ARBOR—National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb. 23-March 2. University of Michigan has many sources available to discuss this health concern, estimated to affect some 1 million boys and men and between 5 to 10 million girls and women. The sources include:

· Karen Stein, associate professor of nursing. Stein specializes in psychiatric and mental health nursing, and her research focuses on personal reflections as motivators and regulators of behavior. She has examined self-concept as it contributes to symptoms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. She is currently working on a $1.25 million, five-year National Institute of Nursing Research Grant/ National Institutes of Health-funded study testing a new form of psychotherapy that focuses on strengths and abilities as the means to develop new identities, thus promoting recovery from eating disorders.

Her current research web site: www.umich.edu/~possibil/index.htm · Dr. David Rosen, director of the Teenage & Young Adult Health program and clinical associate professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases at the U-M Health System, has been involved in research projects about eating disorders, particularly involving children. University Health Service will observe eating disorder awareness week March 9-15 as the national week falls during U-M’s spring break. Events include a kickoff March 9 titled “Food Loves Your Body,” a presentation on body image, culture and ethnicity March 11, a panel discussion March 12 titled “Reclaim Your Culture! Reject Media Manipulation,” and an event called “Breaking the Silence: Gay Men and Body Image,” featuring student stories and performances March 14.
