University of Michigan names Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellows

ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellows program has named the American journalists designated for the academic year 2003-2004. While on leave from regular duties, Knight-Wallace Fellows pursue custom-designed sabbatical studies and attend special, twice-weekly seminars in Wallace House, a gift of CBS newsman Mike Wallace and his wife, Mary. The group named is the 31st to be offered fellowships by the University of Michigan. Each Michigan fellow receives a stipend of $55,000, supported by gifts from foundations, news organizations and individuals committed to improving the quality of information reaching the public. Charles R. Eisendrath, who directs the program, announced that six international fellows will be named next month. U.S. fellows and their study projects are:
Jennifer Babson, 32, Keys bureau chief, The Miami Herald.
Diaspora, identity and community in Latin America. Eve Conant, 31, Moscow correspondent, Newsweek.
Radioactive and chemical pollution in developing countries. Rob Daumeyer, 38, editor, Cincinnati Business Courier.
Race and inner city economics. Nancy Derringer, 45, columnist/reporter, The News-Sentinel (Fort Wayne).
Old media, new media and an informed public. Vahé Gregorian, 43, reporter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
History and the demise of sportsmanship. L’Tanya Joyner, 43, business writer, Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
9/11 and the sense of loss. Salwa Kanaana, 33, correspondent/web editor, Al-Quds Al-Arabi Newspaper.
Press freedom and political stability in the Arab world. Mary Losure, 50, environmental reporter, Minnesota Public Radio.
International environmental issues. Chris Lydgate, 37, assistant news editor, Willamette Week.
Emerging diseases and syndromes. Vince Patton, 40, environmental reporter, KGW-TV (Portland).
