ANN ARBOR—Five first-year students at the University of Michigan are the first recipients of the Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to academically outstanding high school students who plan to major in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science or another related scientific field at U-M. As a condition of the scholarship, recipients must meet one of the following geographic criteria: residents of Virginia; residents of the greater Ann Arbor area; graduates of New Trier High School, Winnetka, Ill.; or graduates of the Chicago area school systems.

Of this year’s recipients, three are enrolled in the College of Engineering and two in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA).

The Bell Scholarship was established in 2001 from the estate of Carlos R. (BSE ’44) and Gloria Wille Bell of Williamsburg, Va. Carlos Bell was an engineering student at U-M in the years following World War II and never forgot those demanding and rewarding days as an undergraduate. He and his wife wanted to help today’s students facing similar and new challenges as college students.

The amounts of the individual scholarships are $7,500 for in-state students and $20,000 for out-of-state students annually for four years, or through graduation, whichever is less.

The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Charitable Trust is managed by McGuireWoods LLP of Richmond, VA.

Christopher Butler, Newport News, Va. He is studying naval architecture in the College of Engineering. He was an Advance Placement Scholar Award winner at Warwick High School.

Jason Houdek, Suffolk, Va. He is studying microbiology in LSA and was on the headmaster’s list at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
