Prominent dancers and scholars examine Balanchine

DATE: Oct. 31-Nov. 1

EVENT: The legacy of eminent choreographer George Balanchine will be illuminated by his former dancers, Suzanne Farrell, Maria Tallchief, Violette Verdy, and Edward Villella, as well as prominent dance historians, at the University of Michigan’s "From the Mariinsky to Manhattan: George Balanchine and the Transformation of American Dance," a two-day symposium.

The depth and scope of Balanchine’s work has been compared to Mozart, and he has been ranked with Picasso and Stravinsky as a titan of 20th century arts.

Topics to be presented include "Mariinsky Years," "Manhattan Years" and "Reconstructing Balanchine." A highlight of the symposium will be Beth Genne’s presentation "Glorifying the American Woman: Balanchine and Josephine Baker".

The even is free and open to the public.
