New Yorker cartoon editor discusses ‘judging what’s funny’

ANN ARBOR—How do you decide whether something is funny? Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker and editor of www.cartoonbank.com, will discuss cartoons and humor during a series of five talks at the University of Michigan. The New Yorker has been world famous for its cartoons and artwork dating back to the 1920s. Its annual cartoon issue will be released next week.

DATE: Nov. 10-14.

EVENTS: The lectures include: • Monday, Nov. 10, "The History of The New Yorker Magazine Cartoons" at noon in 4448 East Hall. • Tuesday, Nov. 11, "The Process of Picking Cartoons" at noon in 1360 East Hall. • Wednesday, Nov. 12, "How One Judges What is Funny" at 4 p.m. in 4448 East Hall. • Thursday, Nov. 13, "Editing Humor" at noon in 1360 East Hall. • Friday, Nov. 14, "How to Create Cartoon Humor" at 3:30 p.m. in 4448 East Hall.
