EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Under 10 Artists exhibit set for December

DATE: Dec. 6, 2-5 p.m. EVENT: Thylias Moss, award-winning poet and U-M professor of English, will read from her children’s book, “I Want to Be,” and distribute autographed copies of the book to children participating in the America Reads program at an exhibit of their art.

The art exhibit will feature the work of children in kindergarten through third grade from Detroit’s Dixon and Vetal Elementary Schools and Alkebulan Village Community Center.

U-M students from the University’s America Reads Tutoring Corps through U-M’s Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Services and Learning serve as tutors in the program. Tutors identified a book for each child to read. Those children then created an art project representing their comprehension and understanding of the book. Their art ranges from masks to paintings to mobiles.

The Under 10 Artists will be attending the event and will interact with guests. The event is free and open to the public.

SPONSORS: In the fall of 1997, the Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning, the Office of Financial Aid, and the School of Education joined forces to form the University of Michigan America Reads Tutoring Corps. Each year, more than 100 university students provide reading assistance to children in area schools, reaching about 300 children and families.

LOCATION: U-M Alumni Center, 200 Fletcher Street, Ann Arbor
