ANN ARBOR—Modest salary increases for the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus in 2003-04 reflect the difficult budget climate for public universities in the state. The University’s Salary Record was released today (Dec. 18).

Faculty salary increases averaged 2.6 percent. The median faculty salary increase (the 50th percentile) was 2.0 percent, the 25th percentile was 1.3 percent and the 75th percentile was 3.1 percent. Thus, half of all faculty received an increase between 1.3 and 3.1 percent. The median is the point where the increase percentage for exactly half the group is greater than that and for half the group is less than that.

Salary increases for staff at all grades averaged 2.0 percent. The median staff salary increase also was 2.0 percent, the 25th percentile was 1.5 percent and the 75th percentile was 2.5 percent. The staff averages include salaries for employees in the U-M Health System and exclude bargained-for employees.

“Despite our budget challenges, we are pleased that we were able to sustain a modest salary increase program for our faculty and staff,” said U-M Provost Paul N. Courant. “We worked hard to cut expenses elsewhere and find the resources to reward our faculty and staff in a small way. It is the faculty and staff that enable the University to carry out its mission.”

Considering the decrease in appropriation from the state, U-M President Mary Sue Coleman and all the University’s executive officers decided not to accept any salary increase from the University this year.

Merit increases for the deans of the schools and colleges averaged 2.8 percent.
