Student research at Brown v. Board theme semester capstone

TIME/DATE: 3-5 p.m.
EVENT: Undergraduate and graduate student research in the Brown v. Board of Education theme semester classes will be presented in a multimedia symposium. Featured projects include: audio documentaries on the history of African Americans in radio broadcasting; urban planning maps of school busing and trends in residential segregation in southeast Michigan cities; videos of student service-learning work on developing an independent media center for youth in a Detroit community; and an oral history of Jones School, the elementary school that served as a community resource to Ann Arbor’s African-American community until it was closed in a 1965 district-wide integration plan.

The event is a capstone to University of Michigan faculty and student work in classes during the Brown v. Board of Education theme semester. A reception will begin at 4 p.m. with remarks by Terrence McDonald, dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and Lester Monts, senior vice provost for academic affairs. Two short documentaries about U-M produced by Dialogues on Diversity—"Michigan 1954" (4 minutes) and "Fulfilling the Promise" (4 minutes)—will be screened at the reception.
