U-M’s National Poverty Center will host three-day symposium

DATES:
EVENT: Poverty and public policy experts will discuss their research and other related trends during a three-day symposium conducted by the National Poverty Center (NPC) at the University of Michigan. The sessions are free and open to the public.

Qualitative Research on Urban Poverty (June 14): Elijah Anderson, professor of sociology, University of Pennsylvania, and Christina Gibson, assistant professor of public policy studies, Duke University.

Immigration and Poverty: Research and Policy Issues (June 15): Cecilia Munoz, vice president in the Office of Research, Advocacy, and Legislation, National Council of La Raza; James Smith, senior economist, Rand Corp.; and Philip Martin, professor of agricultural and resource economics, University of California-Davis.

After Welfare Reform: Policy and Research Issues (June 16): Kristen Seefeldt, research investigator, and Sheldon Danziger, co-director of the National Poverty Center, both from U-M; and Douglas Besharov, American Enterprise Institute scholar and professor of public affairs, University of Maryland.

TIME: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day, receptions follow.

SPONSOR: NPC, which was established in fall 2002 as a university-based, nonpartisan research center. The institute is administered by the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and linked with many other schools, units and research centers at U-M.

For nearly 40 years, the federal government has supported a university-based "national poverty center" where experts work to improve the public’s understanding of poverty in the United States and to evaluate poverty-related programs and policies. Major funding for the NPC comes from the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
