ANN ARBOR—University of Michigan student Brandon Stone of West Bloomfield has been awarded one of 25 Summer Research Fellowships by The Endocrine Society.

The fellowships are awarded to provide laboratory experience, summer income and to allow the students to conduct research in endocrinology instead of working in an unrelated field. Stone is one of the rare undergraduates to win the fellowship.

Stone will be working with Sally Camper, professor in the departments of Human Genetics and Internal Medicine at the U-M Medical School, and one of her graduate students, Robert Ward.

According to Stone, they will be conducting experiments to determine the role of blood vessel formation in mouse pituitary development.

“The mice we will be working with have genetic mutations similar to those found in people with combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD). Through this study we hope to elucidate the mechanisms associated with CPHD, which will ultimately lead to treatments for people with this disease,” Stone said.
